Urban Hiking

Conquer the City on Foot

If you don't want to go on a bike tour, you can also hike through Gelsenkirchen. In an urban environment, this is the perfect option for getting to know a place in depth. The contrasts between urban life, reawakened former industrial sites, still abandoned, enchanted places, areas where visitors can hardly guess what strenuous jobs were once carried out there. Everything that characterises Gelsenkirchen can be found on the routes. Collieries and slag heaps, currywurst and beer, sweets and brine eggs, football and culture, nature and city.

From Buer to the Arena

Gelsenkirchen's football temple, the Arena auf Schalke, is located in the north of the city. From Buer, the centre of the north of the city, a short, easy walk away from the main roads takes you past Berge Castle with its beautiful park and pond. A beer garden at the castle invites you to stop for a short break and refreshment.

Urban Hiking Ückendorf

A varied city hike through Gelsenkirchen's trendy Ückendorf neighbourhood: sculpture forest, fantastic panoramic views from the slag heap, enchanted places, former industrial areas, trendy pubs, art on the walls of buildings - the 12.8 km hike has it all.

Through Buer and Westerholt

In the very north of the city, a hike takes you on a foray through the almost rural Gelsenkirchen. It takes you to the city limits of Herten, where Gelsenkirchen-Buer and the Herten district of Westerholt meet. Part of the 10-kilometre route also leads through the idyllic Westerholt forest.
